That's A Wrap!

Rhiannon's big end of year recital for dance is tomorrow.

It's in a real theater.
A big, 2000 seat, beautiful and ornate theater.

I'm so excited for her.
She is going to have such an amazing time!

Clara, 4, with her homemade Dr. Seuss face.  Rhiannon, 5, with her homemade Dr. Seuss hat.

Have a great weekend!

White Castle Candles

I enjoy reading our local newspaper for a few reasons.

First, the police blotter is laughable.

Second, front page news usually involves what is happening with the senior citizens in the area.  For example, this week it talks about the Senior Citizens Idol contest.

For an entire page.

As an added bonus, this week someone is trying to sell two slightly used white castle candles.Yes folks, for only $13 you can make your house smell like a white castle burger.

That's the stuff dreams are made of.

In other news, I am in the process of planning Clara's 4th birthday party.

How is it even possible this little buggar is going to be 4?!?!

I still see her like this.

Happy Friday!

Daylight

Rhiannon had her first cooking lesson.
She informed me that she wanted to learn how to cook southern style food.

This really is NOT the job for me to teach,
(this is a job for Mrs. Ritter).

However, I have a few recipes from Mrs. Ritter and that is just going to have to do.

So she made jambalaya.
It was incredibly tasty and I am proud of how her first stab at it went.

I learned that she needs some serious help with her knife cutting skills.  I thought for sure we were going to find a finger in our food the way she was hacking at the celery, so we worked on that a bit.

She also learned what "natural casings" mean.
She was not impressed, to say the least.

We then learned that it is NOT OKAY to have your sister "help stir" a scalding hot pot on top of a high flamed gas stove.

Like never-ever-ever.

(Especially when you have to stand on a stool to see over the pot!)

The end result was fantastic, and I am one proud Mama!

Good work, Rhiannon!

Melt Your Heart

The Good

Clara bought her very first art pieces on Saturday.  They are done by the very talented Melvin Mcgee

You should always always always support local artists.  More likely then not they pour their heat and soul into each and every piece they make.

The Bad

Clara got in a fight at school yesterday.  Apparently it was over who was going to play with a toy first.  When we asked her about it she said

"I pulled a knife on her."

(That is three year old for, "She had the play knife and I tried to pull it away from her.")

The Ugly

While being reprimanded for said fight, Clara hit her teacher.

Awesome.

At the very least, she feels ashamed about this.
I'm mortified.

As for Rhiannon, I haven't seen someone with such a stacked social schedule.  I think it's fair to say she has comfortably settled into her suburgatory skin.

As for me, I'm still unpacking.

Somewhere That's Green

We have been in our home for two weeks now, and we have learned some valuable lessons about ourselves.

First one:  We should never ever ever buy a fixer upper.

Like Ever, ever.
Ever.

The Mister is too busy with work and I like having a nice clean and polished looking home.  I would like to think that we could buy a little place and make it up just right for us, but reality is, we would hire someone to do all the leg work and probably get divorced in the process.

For example, last night the Mister was finally able to go up in the attic to measure where the joists and studs are in the ceiling.  (Why?  Because the chandelier in the dining room is hanging about a foot and a half next to the breakfast bar instead of over the table, where it should be.  AND IT IS DRIVING ME BAT SHIT CRAZY!)  Anyway, the attic is very......cramped to say the least.  The Mister had to frog walk from one end of the house to the other.

It. Was. Hilarious.

The whole time he kept grumbling.

"*@$#;, this is why I went to *#@$^ college.  My wife and her %;^# chandeliers.  This is ^&# disgusting.  I am going to fall to my #@% death.  That's her real plan on why she got me up here."

I have been trying to get this place in order since the first moment we stepped in.  I know exactly how I want it to look, and I want it to look that way NOW!  When we first looked at the place it was easy to tell that the last remodel was in the early to late 90's.  The house was feather painted in pastel colors, there is white tile and beige carpet as far as the eye can see and the light fixtures look like the ones I removed in this post here.  I have spent hours each day painting, going to the hardware store, pruning (the 5,000,000 hedges that are in the yard) and driving my family to all the different schools, trains etc.  I feel like I have definitely jumped in feet first in the suburban lifestyle.  I even go to drive thru Starbucks, for Christ sake.

Long story short, I am really trying to embrace our new lifestyle here.  I am trying to make our new home so the girls will be able to have the "country life" they have been asking for for over two years now.  So imagine how disheartened I was when  the oldest told me that she feels like she is living in the sitcom Suburgatory, without the funny.

She says the girls are kind of mean and all they care about is gossiping and shopping.  (Isn't that just 8th grade?  It's the age, right?)  She also says we didn't move far enough from the city, and we should have moved to a small town.
Face.  Slap.  For.  Me.

She's trying out for Cheerleading today, and if she decides that isn't for her I am going to push her into joining some clubs, and hopefully she will feel better in her "suburgatory" skin.

Clara, on the other hand, is flourishing.  She marches into school everyday without ever looking back.  I don't plan on doing any kind of gardening until spring, but she has been begging us to use her new shovel to "dig up the flowers" since we got here.

The other day The Mister and I let her get a few supplies for her new garden.

Here I was teaching her how to dig.
She didn't realize that you don't actually throw the dirt over your shoulder cartoon style, and is laughing at how silly she is.

Putting the flowers in the ground and realizing she likes playing with dirt clumps more then planting flowers.

This is my favorite.

The Mister putting up her garden decoration she picked out.

(The neighbors are probably terrified we are going to become "those" people.  Actually, I think they watch us from their window and laugh at us most of the time.  I know I would.)

But she's happy and that is all that matters.

Brand New Beginnings

There has been a lot of firsts around these parts.

First time we bought a house, first time we lived in the suburbs,
first time I ran a triathlon.......

 first day of pre-k........

and first day of 8th grade in a new school.

Today my body is feeling the race I ran yesterday, but even worse, my stomach is in knots for Rhiannon.  I, too, started a brand new school in 8th grade.  I met my two best friends on that first day.  I sure hope her first day of 8th grade goes as well as mine did.

Please excuse me as I pace the floor until she gets back home....

Happy Monday!

Color Me Bad

Rhiannon and her step sister went to see Justin Bieber last night.  When I picked them up they had no voices and aching feet, which could only mean one thing,

They had a ridiculously fantastic time.

I am so happy that they have an interest in seeing live music - even though it is not the kind of music I wish they were listening to.

Do you remember the very first band you saw without your parents being with you?  After thinking about it, I remembered that my first parent free concert wasn't any better than the Biebs.......

(Hey girls,  {I won't personally call you out on our poor concert going choices}  remember riding around after this show and pulling up right next to these guy's limo?  Remember when they rolled their windows down and we started screaming like banshees?  Good times, good times!)

Atrazine

Today is Rhiannon's last day of 7th grade.
Tomorrow I have to take her to her fathers house for the summer.
I think that sucks on every single level.
I want her to stay with me.
Here is her first day and last day of school picture.  She has grown so much!  I think that sucks too, but in a good way.  I can not believe She is going to be in 8th grade next year!
Jeebus!
Please slow down, time!
A fellow blogger in the Chicago area that I follow has had a bit of bad news lately.  She found out one of the twins she is carrying had an omphalocele, which is in the same genre as gastroschisis - which is what Clara had.
Her case is more severe then what we had and unfortunately she has lost one of her twins.  We got to talking and I had brought to her attention the herbicide Atrazine, which is used heavily in the Midwest and is known to cause both of these terrible birth defects.  It is also banned everywhere except in the good old US of A.  I know for a fact this is what caused Clara's problems.  She is quite sure this is what caused her to lose her baby, too.
This herbicide is not safe in any amount and it NEEDS to be banned.
Please help us by signing the petition.
Remember, this defect is not prejudice.  It can affect you, your mother, your sister, your wife and your daughters.
Nobody should have to go through what we did.
Nobody should lose their child before they have a chance to love them like my fellow blogger did.
Sign the petition here.

Dinosaur

Lately Clara has gone into the "Not sure if I should be a baby or a big kid" phase.

It's driving me crazy.

I am so envious of all these other mothers I see who have patience made of steel.

That is a virtue that has most definitely escaped me.

The baby talking and the whining are like nails on a chalkboard.
(Bat.)  (Shit.)  (Crazy.)

So to combat it we have been going to the YMCA more, participating in classes more and visiting with friends more.

It's not curing it, but (maybe) definitely helping.

Does your child babytalk you to death?
How about cry and whine you to death?
How do YOU deal with it?

Have you found the magic secret for nipping it in the bud?

(If you say it's patience, I will scream.)

Do you want to know a dirty little secret?

(I like Kesha.)

She's raunchy and trashy and completely inappropriate
and that is why I like her.

Her song Dinosaur could be my best friend and I's anthem from when we were just wee one's in our late teens and early twenty's and being pursued by nothing but dirty old men.

So, this Wednesday, you get Kesha.
And it is totally dedicated to my friend, Julie Lyn.

No Love....No Love At All.......

Today Clara has called me and/or said to me:

Mama you're....

  • A Jerk.
  • The worst ever.
  • You aren't stupid Mommy, No.
But I'm not sure if she was being serious or not.
  • And then she flipped me off while saying, "Look, Mom!  I found my pinkie!"
It's been a fun day, to say the least.....

Happy Monday!

Fears

Did you work on your fears this weekend?

She did!

We did as well.

We went and looked at an old farmhouse this weekend.

It needs work.

And by work I mean I would want to tear down at least 5 different walls, it needs a complete kitchen rehab and two bathroom rehabs.  Since I grew up with this guy who can build/make/fix pretty much everything under the sun I see it as a fun challenge.  The Mister, however, just see's it as scary.  Right now we need to see if the foundation is okay, as there were a few scary looking spots.  Lets hope it is something a little tuck-pointing can fix and not something more serious.....

Have you ever been a part of a major house renovation?
How did that work out for you?
What were your biggest concerns?
(ex What did you and your partner disagree most on?)

Happy Monday, Folks!

Bicycle Race

Happy May Day, friends!

Don't forget to surprise one of your neighbors with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  When I was a kid, we used to cut lilac sprigs off my mom's bush and leave them on my grandmothers step.  It was one of my favorite ways to celebrate spring!

Today I did something I told myself I would never ever ever ever do.

Like EVER EVER do.

(Do you want to know how to instantly suck the cool factor out of your awesome vintage Schwinn bike?)

Put one of those on the back.

Want to know how to instantly suck all of the fun out of bike riding?

Put an overly cautious three year old in the seat.

I really wish she would have inherited just a little of my carefree spirit.  Instead she kept telling me over and over....

"This isn't safe, Mama!  Please stop going so fast!  I want to go home now!  There are to many bumps! I want to take a nap!  Please stop riding! I want Daddy!"

She is definitely her fathers daughter.

When we got home I assured her that this was very safe.
I also let her know we are going to ride every day.

I'll let you know how this ends up for me.

I wanna hold your hand.

I read this blog post a while ago and now almost everything the wee one in my house does, mentally brings me back to the list.

Take last night, for example.  The Mister and I were jolted from our slumber because of a terrible, ear shattering wail that was coming from Clara's room.  I jumped out of bed and half ran-half stumbled into her room believing that I was going to find something incredibly harrowing.

Like.........

  •  a fire.
  • Or a real life boogie man.
  • Or at the very least, maybe she had an accident and peed the bed.
  • Or had a nightmare and fell out of the bed.
  • Maybe she hit her face in her sleep and her nose was bleeding.
  • Maybe there was a giant spider on the wall.

All of these terrifying possibilities were running through my head in the 8 seconds it took me to get from my room to hers.

I would have accepted any of these as valid reasons for her screaming.

However, when I went into her room I found her and the dog both sitting on her bed (much like this, except in the dark),

And she said in a very calm and plain voice,

"Mama, give me cookies."

  COOKIES, FOLKS.

That was her reason for waking up an entire city block at 4 in the morning.

For COOKIES.

I'm going to let you figure out who did NOT get cookies.

Smoking

I had been trying to quit that delicious, beautiful and glorious thing called "smoking" since my Grandpa was diagnosed with cancer over five years ago.

(Guilt and sadness doesn't seem to work for me.)

For some folks, quitting is as easy as tossing them away and never looking back.  I envy those people.  For me, cigarettes have always been more then just a dirty habit.  It literally had become part of my life.

If I was feeling sad?

I gave myself a cigarette break and got over that shit!

I'm exhausted?

I know just what to do! Smoke a cigarette and have a coffee.
Insta-awake!

Happy or excited?

Let's smoke ourselves a cigarette and celebrate that shit!

Someone/thing piss me off?

I'm going to smoke a cigarette and plot out my revenge.......

Don't even get me started on when the libations break out.  It is so hard to abstain.

And here's the thing, once you have something become intertwined and so deeply rooted in your life, it becomes more then just a crutch or habit.

It becomes a sweet friend that is always there and never lets you down.

Ever.

Until the very end where it ultimately wins.

Honestly, I first really started smoking so I could have a reason to go on "break" when I was cocktail waitressing.  I smoked Capri's, for goodness sake!  Those aren't even real cigarettes!  It was just an excuse to sit down for ten minutes!

I was in complete shock, and quite disgusted with myself the first time I realized I actually depended so much of those little fire sticks.

When I first started trying to leave my dear old friend behind, I remember another dear old friend, Britta, tried to help me by telling me how she quit it.

She even mailed me a paper she wrote on all the things that worked for her.
In this list she told me a few things that are LIES.

LIES, I tell you!

1.  Once you quit smoking, you won't be able to stand the smell anymore.

LIE!
I walk by the groups of exiled smokers and take long, deep breaths.  It smells so tasty.
So tasty!

2.  If you get the urge for a cigarette, just go run around the block.  You wont want one after that.

LIE!
I run/swim/bike every day.  Literally, every single day.  Almost immediately after I'm done I think about how tasty a cigarette would be.

Every. Time.

3.  It get's easier with time.

LIE!
Like I said above.  I have been on this road of quitting for a very long time.

It started out with no more smoking in the house.  This was the easiest part (which is saying something, since in Chicago we have a brutal 8 months of winter.)  I think the brutal cold made it easier to not smoke as much.

When we decided to have Clara, I quit.  That was easy, as my body rejected even the smell of it.  I watched others use the patch so they wouldn't smell like smoke around me.

(This seemed to work for them, until they forgot to take it off at night.  Holy night terrors!)

After Clara was born, however, the want for a cigarette came back very easily. It has been so hard to try and not only be a good example for the girls, but to better myself in this journey of quitting.  I have not always been strong either.  When things get hard, or scary, or I am at my wits end I still turn to my most trusted friend.

And to be completely honest, the threat of lung, throat and other cancers is not what eventually scared me away from my dear old friend, cigarettes.

The only thing that has been doing the trick is the threat of becoming an old, wrinkly, bag of a woman before my time.

How vain is that?

But whatever works, and it is a work in progress.

So to all my fellow trying to quitters out there, keep up the good fight!  I know I am.  Some days better then others.....and today I am missing that old cancerous friend of mine!

Happy Friday!

Give a Little Love

Everyone is working on their own journey in this life.
Right now I am trying to work on my lack of patience.

To be perfectly honest, most days my kids drive me crazy.

Like yesterday.

So I kicked them out.

It seemed to do us all a bit of good!

Story Time Win!

Clara and I had a huge breakthrough today which I will get to in a minute.  I first have to say something about a pretty disgusting and disheartening post that popped into my facebook news feed a few times today.

I notice that lots of people have been brought over here by a "Chicago Now" blogger's post about "Mommy Wars".

Let me assure you that this blog post is not written to start a mommy war.

Only to throw out a few suggestions on how people can still celebrate the "silly" hallmark holidays with their children without breaking the bank or making crazy crafts that would take days to conduct.

Like paper-mache earths.

Carry on.

(Before I say my piece, we all know what opinions are like and that we all have one.  This is just my opinion on this subject.)

If you don't want to read the article I will summarize it for you.

This mommy blogger is pissed off because her oldest child wants to help her and her husband make St. Patrick's day fun for his younger siblings by asking her this.

"Can I help you guys hide the gold coins?" he asked. The WHAT?  "The gold coins. I know the leprechauns aren't real. I know it's you, like Santa. So I want to help you. I can make the leprechaun trap, too."

Then she tells you how when her kids woke up disappointed, they threw fits and she didn't care because every holiday under the sun has been over-commercialized.  She also tells you she is a real life mom who doesn't "pinterest" all holidays for her kids and is happy that she can just get everything she needs to done in a day including spending bathing her kids, helping them with homework and having normal quality time at the dinner table with a homemade meal every night.

After reading the article I immediately didn't like the woman.

The tone she set in this article wasn't funny.

It was mean.

And directed at her children.

For all the world to see.

This person's comment towards the article is exactly how I feel as well.

Yeah, it's weird how like when kids are born they like have these needs and we're like supposed to take care of them and feed them and then they like grow bigger and we have to like read to them and help them with their math homework and play outside with them and even give them baths...and like sometimes we even have to do silly things for them because they are children and they like to be silly and enjoy their childhood before the actual stress of life kicks in and they are forced to deal with situations and events that are not silly or fun. Seriously, all we need is one more HuffPost blogger complaining about the horrors of being a parent!

Amen.

Suck it up, Kristen Howerton.  Go give your kids a childhood.

I am a single mother turned into a stay at home mother.  I understand that sometimes you feel worked to the bone.  I understand that this role as a mother may feel like a chore.  However if you live in America, like me, then you have the the choice to have, and/or, keep your children.

It's not like you are the first person in the face of the planet to have children.  You knew what you were getting yourself into.

I'm sure you knew before going into this lifelong, exhausting wonderful job, that it is in fact a life long, exhausting and wonderful job.

So suck it up.

Pretty soon your children will be as old, cynical and bitter as you, Ms. Howerton, and you will miss their wide eyed wonder.  Instead of seeing - and turning -  these little moments as negative, why not give them a few positive experiences and help them grow WITH their imaginations?

It does not have to be pinterest board worthy.  Really!  I promise your kids are not looking for a grown up expectation of any holiday!  This problem she has is not hard to fix.  It can be incredibly cheap and painless to give kids an imaginative filled childhood.

  • Do your kids want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day?  Spray paint a few quarters or pennies gold and have a freaking gold hunt with them when they wake up in the morning.

If they want candy, let them use their gold coins to get some bubble gum at the super market.

Or go outside for a freaking leprechaun hunt.

Cheap.  Easy.  Painless.

  • Oh, your kids want to celebrate Pi day and you make a homemade dinner every night anyway?  Chicken pot pie for dinner it is!  What's that?

You don't cook?  I'm pretty sure your grocery's freezer section sells really cheap pot pies.  Don't like pot pies?  Real pies work too.

Even semi-burnt ones.  (Take that pinterest!)

Cheap.  Easy.  Painless.

  • So your kid wants to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday?  That's easy.  Read them a book.  Make up a new book by rhyming silly phrases and words.  Or take some tape/staples and make a hat.  Hell, they can even do these (make hats/book) while you make their homemade dinner.

Cheap!  Easy!  Painless!

I understand that in the age of Pinterest we all sometimes feel like we are not doing "enough" because someone is always one-upping you but let me let you in on a little secret.....

Your kids don't give a shit if you spend your money on these holidays.  They only want your time.  Make sure you are spending it with them - while they still want to.

P.S.

Clara voluntarly interacted with other children today.  She willingly walked away from me and sat in the front row during story time.  And she had a fantastic time while doing it.

Thank all the gods!  There is hope for preschooling yet!

Happy Humpday!
