Pocketful of Money

What a beautiful, dreary, warm and misty day we are having.

Days like today just increase my desire to live on the northwest coast.  Nestled in between the redwoods and the ocean, watching the whales make their yearly trek all while being a short distance from a few delightful wineries really is where my heart is at.

I officially have my house purged and scrubbed.  I also have ALL of my laundry washed, folded AND put away.

It's like a modern day miracle.

I think I'm finally getting the hang of this whole "adult" business.  It's a good thing, too, (since I am now 31) and because last week proved that I shouldn't try and act like a 20 yr old ever again.

I just.....can't.
No.  No.  No. No. No.

Lets re-cap.

This is Rick.
He had a pretty amazing set up for his tailgate, including a bears ambulance and ample amounts of fireball whiskey.
His friends really liked my little sisters.

Actually the three of us made lots of friends that day.
Let's just leave it at that.

Thankfully those are the only pictures I have of the weekend.
Tailgating/Bears game was a fun experience, but I don't think I ever want to do it again.
Youch!

We hosted another friends thanksgiving at our house.  It's something we like to do every year, and for a few reasons.  We originally started this tradition of ours because we both worked crazy shifts, him with what he does and I as a bartender.

When I used to live in  my small town (frame of mind) I would always think it was sad when people didn't have a place to go on thanksgiving and therefore ate their dinner at a bar.  Then I quickly became that person and my view was drastically altered.

Working Thanksgiving at the bar let me experience the holiday in a different (and better) light.  Everyone who came to those thanksgiving meals were truly joyous to be there.  We were our own little community and thankful to be a part of that community.  We were happy to have other outcasts to share a meal and conversation with.  Nobody was judging us on our lifestyle choices, working habits, vices, etc.

We would all share our meal together and tell the most inappropriate stories and jokes.

There was (almost) never any fighting or hurt feelings.

And, as an added bonus, I would make a hefty amount in tips.

After I quit the bar scene (hallelujah!) The Mister and I had our first family thanksgiving.  We realized that was not how we wanted to spend our holiday every year.

Our prior years of spending it with friends in the bar had left us jaded, (or maybe just opened up our eyes,) to what our expectations of the holiday are and how it should be spent.

Most of our friends live all over the world, but call somewhere around Chicago as their home-base.  They come back every year to visit their families.

We all want to see each other anyway, what's more perfect of an idea than to host a giant dinner with our chosen family?

We can't think of anything and every year it just gets better.

The Mister smokes and grills the turkey every year.  I have never tasted a turkey as good as our thanksgiving birds.
At one point of the night, our entire basement was filled with adults and children, toys were thrown everywhere, children were chasing each other, screeching and laughing, adults were singing, joking, dancing and laughing.

I could feel just how full my heart was and I could not have been more thankful then at that moment.

Chocolate covered fruit, marshmallows and pretzel sticks.  Easiest desert I ever made.  (Tastiest, too!)

(I didn't get to take a lot of pictures since I was in the kitchen most of the day so most of these pictures are stolen from our friends.)

My Chicago Gals.

I'm so thankful for their acceptance into the group when I was a newbie.
These are a few of the best gal's I have ever known!
And, of course, there's Buehrle, who is desperately asking for something.

I bought a bunch of puzzles and games for the kids.  They liked the games, but I think the rock painting was the biggest hit.
(Figures!)

And finally, the boys after their football game.
I don't know about the rest of them but The Mister sure did complain about being sore for days after.

I hope your holidays were also spent with the people you hold dear!

Crystalize

This weekend was wrapped up with one of my best friend's weddings, followed by a bittersweet goodbye to another great friend who is starting a new adventure in life halfway across the country, meeting a brand new baby who is the sweetest little thing I've ever seen and immediately followed by a phone call filled with wonderful and exciting news that I can not talk about right now.

For all you youngsters out there, believe it.

30 is the new 20.

They/Superhero City

My days are officially filled with packing up a house and all the worries that come with buying your first home.

After all is said and done, and whatever may happen when all of this is all behind us, I am going to pour my Mister and I the stiffest drink possible.  I'm thinking a Gin, party of two, will be in order.

(Some shots of us at our friend's boy's birthday party from this weekend.  It was superhero themed.  And awesome.)

Scaring the Mister into thinking I want another one of these.

NOT!

Clara and her superhero, girl-power friend.

Taunting Clara, telling her we are taking the baby home.
She totally didn't buy it.

Thanks for once again outdoing yourself and throwing a fabulous bash, Breiers!

Ponies

Well, our apartment has officially been rented and we have a mere 36 days till we close on our house.
(Where's my brown paper bag?????)

So, obviously, when we had an opportunity to either start packing the house OR go bet on the ponies.....we chose the latter.

I'm really glad we did, too.

It was a gorgeous day.

Clara packed a book bag to take along.
This made The Mister very excited and dubbed pony day as
"Daddy School Day".

Clara even had some friends come and join the fun!

The weather was perfect, a little hot in the sun but perfect napping weather in the shade.
I love it when Clara naps on me.  She is constantly go go go go go these days.  Its nice to have little remnants of the baby she once was.

Today I should be packing the house, but I woke up this morning feeling terrible!  I've been dizzy and nauseous all day.  I was the DD this weekend, so its not from playing to hard and I went to bed at 10:30 so it's not from lack of sleep...I don't have time to be sick so I am going to go ahead and rule that out as well.
\
Lets just blame this on it being Monday.

Happy Monday!

Coffee Talk

I'm really glad I came home the other day.
The Mister has had an awful case of the flu since Sunday.
I don't know what you're like when you are sick, but my Mister is an angel.  He doesn't ask for anything.

If you do anything to try and help him, such as bringing him water, he will profusely and sweetly thank you in the most adorable and pathetic way.  Like a puppy.
I don't know how he stays so sweet.
When I'm sick I turn into an absolute beast.

(Speaking of beasts.......)

So, I own this shirt.

It is pretty accurate of how I feel in the mornings.
One of the more important requirements of any new apartment I had has always been:
Is it within walking distance to a coffee shop?

(On a scale of one to ten in importance, coffee ranks at 11 1/2)

Last week I had went out and had some cocktails with my friends.
I stayed with one of them that night and awoke to the softest and cutest cuddle buddy ever.
(Shhh.....don't tell the Mister!)

Cocktails were flowing and when we awoke, Toby and I were thinking the exact same thing......

I NEED COFFEE!

However, I soon found that coffee wasn't easy to get around those parts.
I had a lot of work to do for my cup'o joe.

First up, you gotta grind those beans.

Mortar and Pestle, of course!
Second, you have to find something to hold all of those freshly (course) grounds...

Cheese cloth, to the rescue!

And finally......

Just add boiling water for about 8-10 minutes!

I told her I know what she is getting for her birthday.
A conventional coffee pot.
Or, at the very least, a French press.
Or maybe a coffee grinder.

Love ya, B!
.....Birds of a feather.....
(don't have the same morning drinking habits...)

Happy Humpday!

Country Dogs

I am supposed to be down south right now, but I'm not.

I had been down visiting this past week and it was so fabulous.
(Until it wasn't.)

While Rhiannon is trapezing around the US with her father and The Mister is working crazy hours in Chicago.....
Clara and I did some serious visiting.

We were able to catch up with about three different people every day.  I desperately needed that.

This picture is fantastic.
Her friend is just as sweet and angelic as this picture portrays.
Clara's little sneer is perfectly matched to her demeanor as well.

She was able to go to her (best friends!) house .
(Cousin visit!)

I was able to get away for an adult only night out with my three all time favorite gals in the whole wide world.

(How did we NOT get a picture of us together? There isn't a single one of the entire night!)

My friend's new "sexy backyard ladies".
I'm so freaking jealous.

I was able to get some family time in.
It really was fantastic.

But then I got in a car wreck.

And then I was almost viciously attacked by a pair of dogs.

I want to get one thing straight, right now.

Unprovoked attacks does not make a dog territorial.  It makes them a liability.  And when a dog attacks someone who was just trying to knock on your door, you have a serious problem on your hands.

When I was trying to warn the person about how unsafe it was to let their dogs roam free when they are so "territorial" I was told that I was:

stupid, "soft" from living in the city, AND that it was MY FAULT THEY TRIED TO ATTACK ME.

I was told that is just how country dogs are and that I need to get over it.

I was only trying to warn someone of what would happen to them when (because it isn't an if, it is a when) the dogs do this to a random UPS guy.  Or any other delivery person, for that matter.  Or perhaps a friend or family member they just don't know that well.

If your dog attacks someone on YOUR property, it is your fault.  You will be responsible for that person's medical bills, you will most likely get sued, and if it is bad enough, you can even be charged with  involuntary manslaughter.  The boundaries of these laws don't stop because you live in the country.

As for the dogs, they will be put down.  Which sucks, because it's not the dogs fault they weren't properly trained.

I don't think I deserved to be made to feel like I did for trying to explain this to someone I love and care about.

Feelings are a funny thing, especially when they get hurt.

Sorry if we had plans this week.
I'm a total flake and came running home as soon as the sun came up yesterday.  I did the right thing.  It feels good to be home.

Happy Monday!

Dinosaur

Lately Clara has gone into the "Not sure if I should be a baby or a big kid" phase.

It's driving me crazy.

I am so envious of all these other mothers I see who have patience made of steel.

That is a virtue that has most definitely escaped me.

The baby talking and the whining are like nails on a chalkboard.
(Bat.)  (Shit.)  (Crazy.)

So to combat it we have been going to the YMCA more, participating in classes more and visiting with friends more.

It's not curing it, but (maybe) definitely helping.

Does your child babytalk you to death?
How about cry and whine you to death?
How do YOU deal with it?

Have you found the magic secret for nipping it in the bud?

(If you say it's patience, I will scream.)

Do you want to know a dirty little secret?

(I like Kesha.)

She's raunchy and trashy and completely inappropriate
and that is why I like her.

Her song Dinosaur could be my best friend and I's anthem from when we were just wee one's in our late teens and early twenty's and being pursued by nothing but dirty old men.

So, this Wednesday, you get Kesha.
And it is totally dedicated to my friend, Julie Lyn.

Southern Accent

A.  Nobody told me that teenage girls eat JUST AS MUCH as teenage boys.  Sometimes, when I am putting her dinner plate down, I feel like if I don't get my arm out of the way, it too will be devoured.  I have never seen such a small person with such a  ravenous appetite!

So to all my friends out there who are just now having babies - (and they are all having boys!) - Don't feel like you are the only one who is feeling the grocery bill blues!  The ones with the girls are feeling it too!

B.  The "why" monster has invaded Clara's brain.  I think I hear that question around 6 million times a day.

C.  We just came back from an amazing trip to Washington D.C.  I don't know what I was expecting to find there, but I didn't think I was going to love the area as much as I did.  I think the biggest breath of fresh air  was the fact that we were not in segregated areas.  (If you are not from Chicago you may not know this, but Chicago neighborhoods are so segregated it is sickening.  I almost feel I am doing my children a disservice raising them here.)

However, while I was in D.C. it felt like I was back in the south, People would sit on their front porches and everyone said hello to you, or was just generally pleasant   THAT does not happen in Chicago.  If someone on the street says hello to me I never stop to chitchat.  EVER.  There is always ulterior motive.  And it usually involves money.

Plus, we left Chicago in a cold and flooded state of emergency while Washington D.C. was warm, blooming and beautiful.  Our cab driver who took us from the airport had to think the Mister and I had both lost our minds since we both were hanging our heads out the window like a couple of dogs for the entire ride.

It was fantastic!

That night we ate at this fantastic BBQ joint called the Kangaroo Boxing Club.

We highly recommend it!

But the reason of our trip was this...

(Congratulations K and D!)

We all had a wonderful time at your beautiful wedding!

Seriously?  Abe even joined in the festivities!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous week!

Box of Rain

The Mister and I are supposed to fly into Washington DC tomorrow.  Perfect timing, eh?  Between the heightened security and all this stinking rain Rhiannon is worried for us.  I had to remind her what will be, will be.  Since I don't have anything new and exciting to write about I will share a few pictures of the baby shower I hosted months ago.  It turned out so cute!

The shower was for a girl whose nursery colors are a soft grey and pink.  I decided to make the shower elephant themed.  This is a painting I made for shower decor/present for the Mamma.

Kids Table

PB&J cut out to look like elephants, juice box's and fruit and vegetable trays to look like Oscar the grouch and Elmo.  (Thanks pinterest!)  I also put some trays of toys under this that the kids could come and get as they pleased.  Best last minute idea ever.  Except next time, I will not be putting stickers in the trays!

Green-eyed Monster

Seeing Mama hold a sweet new little baby makes me become the clingiest and most scared three year old in the whole world!

(Seriously.  It's a good thing she's the baby!)

Good thing she had some fantastic distractions!

Thanks for the fabulous afternoon Mr. & Mrs B!  We loved getting to meet your sweet new little babe!

Happy Monday!
